Acne scarring occurs when acne is so severe that it has damaged the skin tissue. Or if we have damaged the skin tissue by picking it (we’ve all been there!).
Acne Scarring Treatment
The first step to treating your scarring is determining which kind of scarring you have. At City Laser Clinic, we are able to treat two types of acne scarring on most skin types. These include:
- Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) – Superficial discoloration left behind by acne.
- Atrophic scars – Deep scars (‘holes’ in the skin) caused by severe acne.
For best results, we recommend starting your treatments as soon as your scars appear. When acne scarring is new, we are able to treat it faster & more effectively. It is also crucial to treat any active acne to prevent new scarring from forming. Luckily, we can treat both at the same time.
Treatment for PIH acne scarring involves 10-12 weekly-fortnightly treatments alongside a homecare regime. Results for PIH are slow, however your skin will be left glowing with no trace of PIH once you’re done.
Treatment for atrophic scars requires 4-8 monthly treatments. Whilst you do not require as many treatments as PIH scarring, we can unfortunately only reduce atrophic scarring. This is because a lot of the skin’s tissue has been lost when the scar formed. Whilst we can attempt to regenerate some tissue, we may not be able to generate it all completely.
Technology
The type of acne scarring you have will determine which treatment will work for you.
For PIH, we will generally advise treatments that will generate skin cell turnover without damaging the skin’s surface. These include a combination of Medlite Q-Switched Carbon laser treatments, BioRePeel, and LED therapy. These treatments will also assist in ridding any remaining acne you may have.
For atrophic scarring, our goal is to ‘damage’ your skin in order to stimulate the skin to repair itself and generate new, healthy, tissue.
Treatments for atrophic scarring include Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling and CO2 Laser Treatments.
Downtime
Carbon Laser Treatment – No downtime, however we do not recommend applying makeup after the treatment to prevent further congestion.
BioRePeel – 1 week downtime. Your skin will begin to mildly shed 2-3 days after your treatment which will last approximately one week.
Vivace RF Microneedling – 1 day downtime. Makeup can be applied the next day.
CO2 Laser Treatment – Two weeks downtime.
